Gloria Petyarre
Born: c1945
Location: Utopia, Central Australia
Language: Anmatyerre

Gloria Petyarre is one of the most successful female indigenous artists from the Utopia region, 270kms northeast of Alice Springs. Like herself, her famous artist sisters, Kathleen, Nancy, Violet and Ada Bird were traditionally raised in their country of Aknangkere and have acquired great knowledge concerning their ancestors and Dreamings. Gloria Petyarre paints her Dreamings “Bush Medicine”, “Mountain Devil”, “Awelye” and “Atnangkere Growth”.

Gloria first gained national recognition as an Aboriginal artist working in Batik in the late 1970s and began painting on canvas in 1988. By 1991 she had her first solo exhibition in Sydney followed by an Interational solo exhibition in New York. In 1999 Gloria was awarded the prestigious Wynne Prize for her Bush Medicine painting “Leaves Blowing in the Wind”. Today Gloria Petyarre is represented in all the State Galleries of Australia as well as international public & private collections.
