Rosemary Pitjara Petyarre
Born: c1945 Location: Utopia, Central Australia Language: Anmatyerre
Rosemary Petyarre was born in Atneltyeye or Boundary Bore on Utopia Station, Northern Territory around 1945 and she was one of a group of Anmatyerre women at the forefront of the art movement in the Utopia region. After the Holmes à Court ‘Summer Project’ sponsored by the CAAMA network in 1988 Rosemary started painting with acrylics on canvas. Rosemary still paints traditional iconography but also the more contemporary styles of the Utopia region. She paints Bush Medicine, Yam Dreaming and Body Painting. The dreaming that is the basis for Rosemary's paintings comes from the important ceremonies and traditions held by the people of her region. Each painting titled 'Bush Medicine Dreaming' shows different aspects from the ceremonies and its important links with the land. Rosemary is sister to famous Aboriginal artist Greeny Purvis Petyarre. Other famous Petyarre artists include well known Gloria Petyarre, Jeannie Petyarre, Kathleen Petyarre, Ada Bird Petyarre, Violet Petyarre, Myrtle Petyarre and Nancy Petyarre.
